Cantaloupe Salty Dog
Give me all the melons. I am currently eating cantaloupe and watermelon like I'll never see another one in my entire life. They are so sweet and candy like and lately they have been saving me from binging on things like sour patch kids...true story. Of course that's the preggers in me talking. If I wasn't pregnant however, I would be sipping on one of my cantaloupe salty dogs as often as I could because it just might be the perfect summer cocktail!
I grew up salting my melons. That's the way all of the women in my family do it. "It brings out the flavor", my mom would always tell me. And you know what? She was right. It really does make any melon extra delicious. Canean thinks I am crazy and has never hopped on the salted melon band wagon. But, that's okay...he doesn't know what he's missing!
One of my favorite cocktails pre-pregnancy to drink in the summertime was a salty dog. Traditionally made with grapefruit juice, this cocktail is perfectly refreshing for a hot summer day. I got to thinking about salt and fruit and how cantaloupe would be the perfect grapefruit sub since it pairs so well together! And boy was I right. This drink is spectacular.
Honestly, I drank straight up cantaloupe juice and salted the rim of my glass the other day and was a pretty happy camper. Imagine if I could add a little vodka to the mix; but since I can't I added it to yours instead!
You can thank me by trying out this delicious summertime spin on a classic cocktail!
Ingredients:
- 1/2 of a Cantaloupe, diced
- 3-4 Oz. Vodka (depending on how strong you like your cocktails)
- 1 Tsp. Kosher Salt, plus more for the rim of your glass
Directions:
- Puree diced cantaloupe in a food processor or blender until smooth.
- Strain through a fine mesh strainer and separate the juice from the pulp.
- In a cocktail shaker combine cantaloupe juice, vodka, and tsp of salt and shake well.
- Pour into salt rimmed glasses over crushed ice.
- Serve Immediately
*Tip: To rim your glass dip the rim into water and then into a plate that has kosher salt on it. Turn glass until the entire rim is lined with salt. Add ice after your glass has been salted. Recipe makes 2-4 servings.
I can't get over how simple and delicious this cocktail is guys! Not to mention it's sherbet color is to die for! Make this drink over the weekend and thank me later! Cheers!
