Homemade Flaky Biscuits with Lavender Honey Butter

Growing up in the South, biscuits are considered a breakfast essential in most family households. Still to this day, when I take a bite of a homemade biscuit, I feel a sense of nostalgia and cooking in the kitchen with my mom covered in flour.  Because if you are making your biscuits from scratch, you should be covered in flour...it goes with the territory.  So when King Arthur Flour asked me to be a part of their Better Biscuit Campaign, how was I supposed to say no?  Of course I said yes and debated long and hard about what kind of biscuit I wanted to make you.  When it came down to it, I had to go traditional, because to me there is nothing better than a perfectly baked warm biscuit slathered in something yummy.  These homemade flaky biscuits with lavender honey butter are going to rock your world in so many ways and I can't wait for you to try them out.

If you have always been the person who buys canned or frozen biscuits out of fear that you would never be able to create such deliciousness on your own, then this biscuit recipe is the one for you!  They are so easy guys, and instead of using my family recipe I took a short cut with King Arthur's Easy Self Rising Biscuit recipe.  If using their self rising flour, you only need three ingredients to end up with flaky yumminess that your whole family will rave about!

I slathered mine with lavender honey butter, because...why not?  And let me tell you I could have eaten half of the biscuits myself.  I could not imagine starting out the week in a more perfect way than with a warm and buttery biscuit that has a hint of sweetness and floral.

If you are hosting a brunch, shower of any kind, or just want to impress everyone who eats with you, then make these biscuits.  Like as soon as you can, make these biscuits!

Ingredients:

Biscuits-

  • 2 Cups of King Arthur Self Rising Flour
  • 1/4 Cup of Cold Butter, cut in cubes
  • 2/3 Cup of Milk, plus 1 Tbsp if needed

*optional: one egg mixed well in a small bowl, for brushing tops of biscuits (this is not a part of King Arthur's original recipe, but I would recommend it)

Butter-

  • 1 Stick of Salted Butter, softened at room temperature
  • 3 Tbsp. Local Honey
  • 2 Tsp. Lavender Buds

Directions:

  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
  • Combine flour and cubed butter in a bowl with a pastry cutter or a fork.
  • Cut in butter until it has combined with the flour and the pieces are pearl size.
  • Add in milk and stir with a wooden spoon until dough has just combined without over mixing.
  • Flour a clean surface and fold over biscuit dough a few times until smooth.
  • Roll out dough to 1/2-3/4 inch thick.
  • Cut out biscuits with a floured 2 inch round biscuit cutter and place on a non-greased baking sheet where the biscuits touch each other.
  • Brush the tops of each biscuit with egg wash so the biscuits brown nicely.
  • Bake biscuits for 10-14 minutes until the tops are golden brown.
  • While biscuits are baking, in a food processor (or mix by hand) combine the butter, honey, and lavender and mix well.
  • Serve immediately with lots of lavender honey butter, now is not the time to skimp!

*Note:  Another tip is that you can place the leftover butter on wax paper and roll into a log to refrigerate to make a compound butter for future use!

I promise these biscuits are super easy and that anyone can master them!  Try them out and make sure you use King Arthur Flour's self rising flour to ensure perfect biscuits everytime!
