Hibiscus Green Tea Granita

Labor Day weekend is this weekend, which for most of us means one extra day off of work! Can I get a woohoo?  I cannot believe that September is here guys!  That means I am having a baby NEXT MONTH!  Crazy town, which means over the next month I will super busy whipping up as many recipes as I can because I will be taking October off for maternity leave.  Recipes like this hibiscus green tea granita!  It's one of my new favorite cold treats to serve and it would be perfect to whip up for your Labor Day festivities!

I'm a newbie to the granita making world.  You might be an old pro, and are wondering why I am just getting on board at the end of the summer.  I gotta tell you I am wondering the same thing, because now I am hooked!  You can literally make any flavor that you want, and they are sooo easy to whip up!  All you need is time at home and you can have yourself an icy and super satisfying treat.

This hibiscus green tea granita is absolutely gorgeous because of the hibiscus and is really good for you too with antioxidants from the green tea and fresh lemon juice!

Obviously, if you wanted to add some vodka to the mix, that would not be a bad idea at all. Matter of fact, it would be a great idea for the weekend!  But regardless if you are going to the alcoholic or non-alcoholic route, this granita is super delicious and you need to make it asap!

Ingredients:

  • 8 Cups of Water
  • 2 Green Tea Bags
  • 1/4 Cup of Dried Hibiscus Blooms
  • 1/3 Cup of Honey
  • Juice from 2 Lemons (about 1/4 cup)

*Optional: Add Vodka

Directions:

  • Bring 4 cups of water to a boil on the stove.
  • Turn off heat and add hibiscus blooms and green tea bags to the water and let steep for 5 minutes.
  • Strain the liquid to remove tea bags and blooms after it steeps and pour into a pitcher.
  • Add remaining 4 cups of water, lemon juice, and honey to the mixture and stir.  Chill thoroughly for at least 4 hours.
  • Pour chilled liquid into a glass dish and place in the freezer.
  • Every 30 minutes scrape the liquid with a fork to break up the ice that is starting to form.
  • Repeat this step for 4-6 hours until granita is totally frozen.
  • Serve immediately or will store overnight.

*If adding alcohol, the freeze time will take a little longer and just be careful to not add too much or it won't freeze properly.

Pretty easy right?  I hope you all have an amazing Labor Day weekend!  Happy granita making!
